How Big Walk Voice Chat Works — and How to Play Without a Mic
A spoiler-light explanation of the distance-based communication system, including text chat and practical microphone troubleshooting.

On this page
Big Walk turns communication into a mechanic. Its proximity voice chat makes voices fade with distance, echo through corridors, muffle through walls and crackle through walkie-talkies. The group should use the game’s own voice or text system rather than treating chat as a separate convenience.
Do you need a microphone?
No. The official FAQ says in-game text chat can support the whole game without missing out. Text follows the same intentional rules as voice: messages become unreadable across long distances or soundproof barriers and can work through communication items.
That makes text a real accessibility option, not a basic global chat box. A group can mix voice and text in whatever way works for its players.
Why Discord changes the experience
Some Big Walk situations enable, restrict or redirect communication. A separate Discord, FaceTime or console party call keeps everyone audible when the game intends the group to lose contact. The software does not stop or punish an outside call, but puzzles may become trivial or confusing.
House House also recommends against playing in the same physical room. Friends in one home can use multiple devices in separate rooms so their voices still pass only through the game.
Fix a microphone others cannot hear
Work through this order:
- Test the microphone in another application.
- Confirm that the cable is fully connected and the headset or mic is not physically muted.
- Open Settings > Audio and watch the Microphone Activity indicator while speaking.
- Check whether Mute Mode is set to hold, which requires holding the talk button.
- Confirm no player has been silenced in the moderation menu.
- On PS5, press the PS Button, open Sound and turn off Mute Game Voice Chat.
If nothing works, switch to in-game text chat instead of moving the party to an outside call.
Fix quiet, doubled or echoing voices
Distance is supposed to lower volume, but the official FAQ also notes that some setups may make close voices quieter than intended. Raise input volume at the operating-system level and move the microphone closer to the speaker’s mouth.
Doubled voices usually mean a microphone is picking up a loudspeaker. Have players mute one at a time to identify the feedback source, then use headphones or mute when not speaking.
Voices cutting in and out can indicate network or performance problems. Close heavy downloads, move closer to Wi-Fi or use Ethernet. If the whole group has trouble, check the host’s connection and frame rate; lowering the host’s graphics settings can help.
Community report: launch-week microphone patterns
Several launch-week reports describe specific setups rather than one universal voice bug:
- Focusrite and multi-input interfaces: players using Focusrite/XLR hardware reported success after combining inputs in Focusrite Control, selecting input 1, or routing through Mixline. These are player-reported setup fixes; preserve your original routing so you can reverse the change.
- Windows Smart App Control: one Steam player confirmed Windows had blocked the game’s lobby audio. Check Windows Security notifications and Protection History for a specific Big Walk event. Do not disable Smart App Control or other security protection merely because this worked for one player; disabling protection carries risk and may not be reversible without resetting Windows.
- Recognized device but no activity: a Reddit poster could select the microphone while the activity meter stayed empty. No commenter supplied a confirmed solution. Test another input device, reselect the intended microphone after launch, and use in-game text while gathering logs.
When reporting a voice bug, include platform, input-device model, whether Microphone Activity moves, whether text chat works, and whether the issue affects one player or the whole lobby. That separates device routing from a session-wide network problem.
Best setup before the first session
Ask everyone to use headphones, test voice activity, install updates and know where text chat is. Choose a stable host, then share a Join Code. Five minutes of setup protects the game’s most unusual feature: communication that behaves like part of the world instead of a call layered on top of it.
Does Big Walk have text chat?
Yes. Big Walk includes in-game text chat for players who cannot or prefer not to use a microphone. Text is part of the world and can be limited by distance or specific situations, just like voice. It is the intended fallback during microphone troubleshooting; an outside Discord call would bypass those communication rules.
